Trader Joe’s Oat Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Sandwiches are a non-dairy take on the classic chocolate wafer and vanilla ice cream sandwich but made with a frozen oat milk base instead of cream.
The Oat Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Sandwiches certainly hit the nostalgia factor and look very similar to the old-school ice cream sandwich of many of our childhoods. The chocolate wafers have that soft, slightly spongy texture that almost disintegrates in your mouth, and they delivered a fairly nice hit of cocoa flavor.
Frozen non-dairy desserts tend to lean either somewhat icy or a little firmer than typical ice cream due to the lower fat content. I found that to be the case with these Oat Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Sandwiches, which were harder than the typically airy, soft ice cream found in most classic ice cream sandwiches. Despite being harder, the frozen oat base seemed to melt at a faster rate, which led to a bit of messy eating near the end. The frozen layer was definitely more generous than I remember in most of the ice cream sandwiches I’ve had.
In terms of flavor, the frozen dessert itself had a light but definitely noticeable oat taste. Like most other vanilla-flavored frozen treats, the actual vanilla flavor itself was basically nonexistent and only provided a sweet creaminess.
Overall, Trader Joe’s made a notable non-dairy version of the traditional ice cream sandwich. It wouldn’t pass off as true dairy, but it’s delicious when considered by itself for what it is: a frozen oat-based dessert. I happen to enjoy the taste of oats and oat milk in general, so I thought these were quite nice.
